NALP & PSLawNet

PSLawNet is housed at, and administered by, NALP - a nonprofit member association comprised of legal career professionals in both the law school and legal employer communities.  Visit our website here.  NALP members work at public and private law schools, law firms, as well as government and public interest law offices.  NALP is dedicated to facilitating legal career counseling and planning, recruitment and retention, and the professional development of law students and lawyers.

Central to NALP’s mission is a strong commitment to facilitating legal careers in public service.  Since 2003, PSLawNet has served as the hub of NALP’s activities to connect public-interest minded law students and attorneys with opportunities around the globe.  NALP and its member law schools support PSLawNet so that it remains a free resource for public interest employers to share information about their missions and employment opportunities for law students and lawyers.

In addition to PSLawNet, NALP promotes public service careers through several key initiatives.  Among them are:

  • The Public Sector & Public Interest Attorney Salary Report – every two years, NALP surveys public interest employers (local and state prosecutors, public defenders, civil legal services, and issue-oriented public interest organizations), gathering data about their salaries and compensation structures.  The resulting report, issued in even-numbered years, has become a national touchstone for organizations to set their salary scales, advocate for higher public interest salaries, and advocate for LRAP programs.  Learn more here.
  • NALP’s Annual Public Service Mini-Conference – NALP’s Public Service Section, comprised mainly of law school public interest career counselors, gathers every October for its one-day Mini-Conference.  The Mini-Conference, which coincides with Equal Justice Works’ Annual Conference and Career Fair, provides a unique opportunity for NALP members and guests to discuss trends in public interest recruitment, retention, and professional development.  To learn more, contact Steve Grumm at sgrumm@nalp.org
  • Partnership with Equal Justice Works – NALP is proud to collaborate with Equal Justice Works during its Annual Conference & Career Fair, the nation’s premier public interest career fair for public interest-minded law students.  Learn more on Equal Justice Works' website.
  • FREE Listing for Public Interest Employers in NALP’s Directory of Legal Employersthe NALP Directory is one of the most widely used recruitment tools in the legal profession. Published both in print and on-line, it includes information - the organization's practice areas, demographics, hiring criteria, starting salaries, hours, benefits, and other valuable data - for over 1,800 legal employers.  Nonprofit and government employers are featured in NALP Directory at no charge.  Contact Steve Grumm at sgrumm@nalp.org to learn more.
  • Reduced NALP Membership Rates for Nonprofit Public Interest Employers & Bar Associations – to learn more, go here.
  • NALP/Street Law Legal Diversity Pipeline Program The NALP/Street Law Legal Diversity Pipeline Program is an initiative designed to provide information about the law and the legal profession to high school students and encourage them to pursue legal careers.  Law firms that participate in the program are matched with local high schools where volunteer lawyers teach substantive law classes in the high school setting as well as hosting programs for participating high school students at the law firm.
