Public Interest Law Firm Careers

Believe it or not, it is possible to work as a full-time public interest attorney with a…gasp…for-profit law firm.  While still considered a niche practice, many “public interest law firms” represent individuals, groups (such as labor unions and member associations), and government bodies on myriad legal matters, including employment and housing discrimination, labor issues, land use and property rights, and much more.

Tracing the Path of a Civil Rights Attorney: From the Nonprofit World, Through Government, and Into a Public Interest Law Firm...

Meet Jenny Yang, a civil rights attorney with Cohen, Milstein, Hausfeld & Toll, a public interest law firm in Washington, DC focusing on employment discrimination, consumer protection, securities fraud, and other matters.  After graduating from law school and completing a judicial clerkship, Jenny received a community service fellowship to work at the National Employment Law Project in New York City,
a non-profit organization focusing on low-wage workers’ rights.  While there, she worked on ground-breaking joint-employer liability litigation to hold garment manufacturers liable for unpaid wages owed to garment workers under the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Jenny then accepted a position with the United States Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division, Employment Litigation Section, where she worked for five years on federal employment discrimination cases against state and local governments.  She litigated cases involving discrimination based on race, sex, and national origin.

From DOJ, Jenny moved into her current practice with Cohen, Milstein, Hausfeld & Toll, where she is a partner focusing on Civil Rights and Employment matters.

Regarding her career pathway, Jenny notes, "While in law school, I did not realize that the majority of civil right enforcement is accomplished through the private bar.  The government has limited resources, and few nonprofit organizations are able to bring large scale civil rights litigation.  I find practice in a public interest firm rewarding because we can challenge large corporations to improve their treatment of workers and pursue innovative strategies to hold employers accountable for their actions."
